Steep and for the most part rolling hills through farmland.

In Mackville, 32 miles from Bardstown we stopped in front of a church (they are everywhere) to make peanut butter, jelly, and Nutella sandwiches. We caught these flies doing it doggy style on the door — I’m not sure if they’re married.

Nine miles later we ran into a little market in Rose Hill. We were still a bit sluggish so Matt got a Mexican Coke and a Milky Way and I some chocolate whole milk (420 calories, oh yes). We sat out on the bench in front and both of us fell asleep for 20 minutes — mouths wide open and probably drooling.

In Burgin we bought a pineapple and broccoli from a gas station before finding the local produce stands across the street. We got a free crooked neck squash, some peaches, bell pepper, and a cantaloupe.

We decided to stop 25 miles early at Chimney Rock and make up the miles next day because we were just so sleepy from the heat, or the time change, or maybe from riding a bike for over 40 days. Ended the day with the best pasta dinner we made on the trip so far.

  1. I believe those bird houses are wren houses. You know, the laughing goes both ways. Hillbillies laugh at us, and we laugh at them.
